January Blog Series Organizing your Living Room and Dining Room

This week in our January blog series, we are moving into the more formal rooms in your home; the living and dining room. These two rooms tend to not be such high traffic areas, which can make them the most neglected spaces in your house.

For many of us use these rooms are used for a variety of purposes. Like myself, we are all probably guilty of using the dining room as a temporary home office, craft space, or homework area. Making it easy to make use a large empty table, that may not be used every day. This can also be the case in the living room, making these rooms the perfect area for extra space for items that you have not found a place for. Remember the room’s main function, the dining room is for eating and the living room is for relaxing, reading, or entertaining.  Go through all of your items, bins, and cabinets in each room. For example, your dining room, is great place to store or display your china, glassware, and silverware, but get rid of anything that is broken or incomplete that you no longer use. If you have been following our posts, the same rules still apply, if you do not use or need it, then toss it.

If your living room is the first room that you walk into in your home, it can become a drop zone of keys, mail, newspapers, bags, and shoes. If this sounds like you at the end of a long day, add a bench by your entry to take off your shoes. Add a console tables in your entry or behind your sofa to use for your keys or mail. If you do not have a foyer, a shelving unit makes as a great divider and will give you added storage.

If you do use these rooms for multiple purposes, make an area to store your computer or crafts, when they are not being used. This will keep your dining room an actual dining room. Most of us already have  some type of cabinet or hutch for storage. If you need or want extra storage to display your dinnerware (or hide away that dated china that you can’t bring yourself to get rid of), a built-in is a great way to enhance the look of a room. Not only can it make your room feel larger, but in can be the perfect way to fit all of your needs, since you customize it.
