January Blog Series: 5 Tips to Organize your Bedroom and Bathroom

Updated: Oct 30, 2019

This week’s post from our January series will focus on decluttering and organizing bedrooms and bathrooms.

1. Start in an easy area, and work in sections!  The cabinet under your bathroom sink, the drawers of your nightstand, or a section in your closet.  I find it easier to stay on track when I work in one area at a time.

2. Pull everything out!  You need to be able to see everything that you have. Including the pieces that were shoved to the back of your closet or drawer, that you forgot you had.

3. Separate everything into 4 categories.

Keep it! If you love it, wear it, and can’t live without it.

Throw it away! Expired products, old paperwork, or a pair of shoes that hurt your feet.

Donate it! Things that are just taking up space….clothes, furniture, knick knacks, toys, even kitchen items could be useful for someone else. Local charity are always locking for items and may even do a pickup.

Sell It! Today it’s easy to sell on-line without having to do a yard sale. (since its not really the season for that) Some great Apps to use to sell clothing or accessories are: Poshmark and Mercari. Facebook has local groups that you can join, such as a buy/sell/swap, where the buyer is responsible for pickup.

4. Ask yourself three questions.

When was the last time I used this? The rule is if it’s been over a year, but I feel you can evaluate after 6 months. Is it seasonal, has it expired, or you just don’t care about it- toss it out or donate it!

Do I truly need this?  Don’t keep it just because someone gave it to you and you feel guilty.

Does this item bring me joy and purpose?

5. Buy containers to store like items.

Everything that you decide to keep will need a home. Stores such as Ikea, The Container store, or Michael’s have great storage solutions to help you get and stay organized.

If you don’t take the time to get rid of the things that you no longer need, you won’t be able to truly appreciate the things you have, make room for new, or ever see the top of your dresser. Still unsure of what to keep? Feel free to enlist a friend to help, or check out this chart we found to help you.
